Remembering the Dead

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace.

John Lennon, Imagine

Memorial Day is a day set aside to remember the dead. It began after the American Civil War as a day set aside to decorate the graves. Until 1971, it was known as Decoration Day. After World War I, the holiday was expanded to remember the dead of all American Wars. And every year we add to the over one hundred million who have died in those wars.

But what if we didn’t have to remember any more war dead because the world was at peace. With everything else going on in people’s lives right now – pandemics, unemployment, lack of medicare, hunger – world peace seems like a fantastic dream.

But just think.

What if we remembered the living? What if all the money spent on weapons and the military could be used to end all those social ills, including this pandemic COVID19?
