~A Great Opportunity ~
Recently we were asked to spread the word about a new grant opportunity. At this time it is only available in Broome County, New York. But we hope that it will become a model, available to socially conscious teachers everywhere.
We already know of efforts happening around New York State to create grant programs like this one, and are very excited at the possibilities. If you are a supporter of addressing social problems interested in starting a grant program in your community, we would be happy to help.
Here is the information for the Teach Peace & Justice Action Research Grant sponsored by Broome County Peace Action.
About the Grant Program
The Teach Peace & Justice Action Research Grant is designed to encourage teachers and students to take positive actions that will foster peace and justice in their school and community.
Action research is the process of investigating a social problem and then designing and carrying out activities to address that problem in some way. For this grant, students under the guidance of their teacher(s) are encouraged to explore issues related to bullying, discrimination, poverty, and violence as they exist in their school or community, and then address that problem with an active solution.
Effective peace and justice action projects address numerous areas in the curriculum. Students will use mathematics in collecting and analyzing statistics, writing in developing their ideas, the arts in designing marketing and instructional materials, and the social sciences in coming to understand the workings of law and government. Collaborative participation will provide opportunities for students to use their creativity and imaginations as well as develop 21st century skills including critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and collaboration. Multi-disciplinary projects are encouraged.
The funds provided by a Teach Peace & Justice Grant can be used toward research, materials, and activities needed to successfully carry out this project. These may include items such as field trips, cameras, printing, and fees. Successful recipients will be expected to make a presentation on their project to Broome County Peace Action.
GRANT REQUIREMENTS
Applicant must be currently teaching in a Broome County school.
The proposed project must
- Must address a specific problem in their school, community, nation, or world
- Incorporate the use of real statistical data
- Have the approval of the school principal
- Include student leadership and cooperative learning methods
- Be age-appropriate
- Be completed by May 1st of 2020
- Be presented at a Broome County Peace Action meeting
Applicants must
- State the problem they are addressing
- Outline the research students will do
- Explain how the problem will be addressed by students in an action plan that includes a timeline for implementation of solution.
- Detail how the money will be used.

LOOKING FOR IDEAS?
Here is a list of some, but not all of the places, to look for potential problems.
- Bullying incidents
- Discrimination based on race, religion, appearance, gender, poverty
- Poverty, homelessness, lack of needed things for school
- Under-representation of some group in educational materials, books, and displays
- Unkindness and disagreement among students on the playground or in other social settings
- Subtle or open conflict between groups
- Problems with rules and/or the legal system
- Community or local government issues related to social justice
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
- Compose and present a musical
- Create a mural
- Create a pen pal program
- Create and distribute leaflets
- Start a newspaper or newsletter
- Design, publish, and distribute an original book or series of posters
- Create and perform a play
- Produce and distribute a video or podcast
- Create a public campaign
- Present to a government body

2019-2020 GRANT PROGRAM
For the 2019-2020 school year a total of $1000 is available. From this amount six grants of about $300 each will be made at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels.
For the 2019 – 2020 school year, grant applications will be accepted starting September 10, 2019.
The deadline to apply is
OCTOBER 31, 2019
Successful applicants will be notified by November 20, 2019
