Rethinking Schools for Social Justice

Looking for a worthy organization to support?

Rethinking Schools is all about teaching for social justice. They provide numerous resources for teachers. Over the years I have used many of their materials to inspire my own teaching. I hope it will inspire yours.

Their excellent quarterly magazine Rethinking Schools carries articles written by teachers about lessons and activities they have carries out in the classroom. Every issue also includes book reviews of children and young adult books.

They also publish a series of books that are compendiums of articles from their magazine and ones by noted educators. All of them are excellent, but we would recommend the following as being relevant to today’s major issues.

Teaching for Black Lives book cover

Teaching for Black Lives focuses on classroom community and how to connect young people’s root experiences in a systemic racist society.

A People's Curriculum for the Earth book cover

A People’s Curriculum for the Earth includes role plays, stories, poems, and resource materials that will spark concern and caring for our environment.

The Line Between Us book cover

The Line Between Us/ addresses the history of US-Mexico relations. immigration through a mixture of articles, role plays, simulations, and more.

If you are a teacher and have taught a social justice lesson, consider sharing it with them. Find more of their books here. Rethinking Schools Books
