The Golden Rule: Treating Our Neighbor As Well As Ourselves

Tomorrow people in the United States will be voting. The outcome of the election is unknown. But what is known is that, no matter which candidate wins whether they are are running for mayor, judgeship, senator, or president, there is one thing they need to do, and what we need to do every moment, every day. And that is to live and act by the Golden Rule.

If every single one of us resolved to do this. If every candidate running for office swore to do this. If every soldier and general vowed to do this. We would have world peace. It is that simple.

All the great religions proclaim the Golden Rule. Here are a few:

Baha’i

“And if thine eyes be turned towards justice, choose thou for thy neighbour that which thou choosest for thyself.” Epistle to the Son of the Wolf.

Buddhism

Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful.” Udana-Varga 5:18

Christianity

“And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” Luke 6:31, King James Bible.

Confucianism

“What I do not wish men to do to me, I also wish not to do to men.” Analects 15:23

Hinduism

“This is the sum of duty: do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you.” Mahabharata 5:1517

Judaism

“…thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”, Hebrew Scriptures (a.k.a. Old Testament) Leviticus 19:18

Native American

“All things are our relatives; what we do to everything, we do to ourselves. All is really One.” Black Elk

Perhaps, someone who said this the best in terms relative to our generation is Fred Rogers
